Throwback Thursday: Horton and Ruth Watkins | 1601 South Warson Road

Here’s a little bit about the past owners of my listing located at 1601 South Warson Road (visit website here.) Who knew they did so much for their community of Ladue!

Horton Watkins, an original trustee of the Village of Deer Creek, and his wife, Ruth, wanted to make a difference in their children’s education in Ladue. Their legacy is Ladue Horton Watkins High School, established in 1952. Watkins was born near Nashville and moved to St. Louis in 1905 to run the Roberts, Johnson & Rand Shoe Co.’s St. Charles Factory. Watkins’ expertise for buying leather came from working in the Tennessee State Prison shoemaking Shop. When International Shoe Co. was formed in 1911, Watkins became vice president and held the position until retiring in 1939.

Ruth, was born in Washington Georgia, and arrived in St. Louis at the age of 6. She later attended Mary Institute and graduated in 1913 from Vassar College as class president and Phi Beta Kappa.  Continue reading “Throwback Thursday: Horton and Ruth Watkins | 1601 South Warson Road”

110 Dielman Before and After Photos | 2017 Ladue News Decorator’s Show House

They say it’s what’s on the inside that counts, and what’s inside the 2017 Ladue News Show House is quite literally – drumroll, please – a second house. Welcome to 110 Dielman Road in Ladue.

Originally built in the 1930s, 110 Dielman Road started out as a charming stone cottage featuring a pattern of triangles and horizontal lines in light gray. Decades later, a massive contemporary addition was added, but unlike modern additions built onto the back of a home, this one engulfed the property, leaving the cottage and its stonework as the nucleus for the expansive estate.

Today, 110 Dielman Road features four bedrooms, four bathrooms and a half-bathroom throughout its 5,175-square-foot interior. The new exterior features oversize windows framing the view of 2-plus acres of property. Inside, the original stonework abounds, as well as other showstopping design details like multiple vaulted wood-beam ceilings and a cobbled stone-and-marble floor.

David Deatherage Interior Design | 2017 Ladue News Decorator’s Show House

A sneak peak of this year’s Ladue News Decorator’s Show House, 110 Dielman! For tickets to the event click here.

“The [guest room] has beautiful light and a gorgeous view of the backyard,” says designer David Deatherage of David Deatherage Design, noting his overall theme for the space was chic, relaxed elegance. The room provided a few challenges, though, including a tight turn to enter the space. This physically limited the pieces Deatherage could bring into the room, and he instantly excluded the canopy bed he originally considered using.

David Deatherage also helped decorate my Bernoudy! See the interior of my house here.
